Horses in snow

Icelandic horses. A common sight in the fields.

Most Icelandic horses remain outside year round, never seeing the inside of a barn their entire lives.

They are not shooed as this would not only make their feet cold but also interfere with their ability to safely navigate the frozen ground.

Often their backs and legs will be covered in a coating of crusted snow which actually helps them keep warm.

With hot springs bubbling up everywhere, the horses always have fresh running water. Their owners periodically drop bundles of hay in the fields during the winter for them to feed.
